We the undersigned, petition the City of Muncie to implement regulations and guidelines for tree trimming and removal by public utilities

Mature trees line many of the streets in Muncie. Take a drive down University and see all the stately sycamores, or cruise down Tillotson and see majestic maples, oaks and tulips. These trees have grown up with the community and provide shade and beauty to neighborhoods and business districts throughout our city.
These trees are now under assault. It's not disease or pests that is wreaking havoc, but overzealous trimming practices implored by the power company, Indiana & Michigan Power, and there contractor Asplundh. Most of the trees removed are healthy, mature trees, that can not be replaced by replanting. It will take 50 years or more for them to reach the size of the trees they would be replacing. Our trees also represent great urban habitat for wildlife and songbirds, and serve as a filter to remove nutrient and sediment from our roadway run-off.
This petition asks that our local government would create regulations to restrict and eliminate this whole scale butchering of our city's mature trees. Mass removal and over trimming is not improvement or progress, it simply puts a black eye on a community that struggles to attract new residents and businesses.

Give our local citizens a voice in how the tree trimming is performed. Please sign this petition and forward it along to all those interested, before the only thing in Muncie taller than the power poles, will be the signs on McGalliard.
